Arm yourself with healthy snacks to avoid the lure of the vending machine

You know it's not the most nutritious thing to do. Which is why National Health Service hospitals in Wales are removing junk food and sugary drinks from vending machines. The government plans to replace those items with healthier choices in an effort to combat obesity.

If you're dieting, definitely skip the calorie-loaded regular soda and have a piece of fruit instead of fruit juice.

But not all junk food is bad for you. And trying to fight off a craving for chocolate or chips isn't always the best thing to do. Sometimes it's better to give in and have a little (that's one serving, guys, not the whole bag) instead of depriving yourself and overeating later.

If you find yourself feeding the vending machine—and your gut—too often, bring healthy snacks to work. Good picks include fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, whole-grain crackers with cheese, and a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread. Sure, it takes effort and planning, but the reward for staying in shape is worth it.
